DeMint Wins CHQ's 2012 Presidential Straw Poll for November
By Adam Cassandra
In the first ConservativeHQ.com (CHQ) 2012 presidential straw poll, a majority of conservative activists chose Senator Jim DeMint (R-SC) as their favorite Republican candidate for the 2012 race. Sen. DeMint took the clear lead in CHQ’s monthly straw poll winning 53% of the votes in the month of November.
Sen. DeMint’s principled stances and support for fellow staunch conservatives during the 2010 election cycle led to political attacks by the GOP establishment in recent months while making him a hero of the Tea Party and conservative movement.
A group of leading conservatives recently sent a letter to GOP leaders Sen. Mitch McConnell, Sen. John Cornyn and RNC Chairman Michael Steele, writing, “We consider such attacks on Senator Jim DeMint an attack on us and all conservatives, and especially the conservative movement that is the successor to Ronald Reagan, William F. Buckley, Jr., and other great progenitors of the conservative movement.”
The influential former Alaska governor and 2008 GOP vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin followed Sen. DeMint in the CHQ poll, winning 38% of the votes.
The libertarian-leaning Congressman Ron Paul (R-TX) finished third in the poll with 34% of the votes. Rep. Paul made an unsuccessful bid for the GOP nomination in 2008.
Sen. John McCain, the 2008 GOP presidential nominee, was the only potential candidate on the list to receive zero votes for the month of November.
CHQ presented 17 potential Republican presidential candidates and allowed voters to pick their top three choices for the nomination. Only registered members of CHQ may vote in the poll.
This poll will continue to be featured—so tell others to vote.
CHQ plans to continue the poll each month, reporting the results to see which political leader conservatives are most interested in seeing as the Republican presidential nominee for 2012.
Other choices for the ongoing monthly poll include former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson, former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, Indiana Rep. Mike Pence, Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan, Texas Gov. Rick Perry and South Dakota Sen. John Thune.
